Scope of the Conference

ACCGE-12 will provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of recent research and development activities in all aspects of bulk crystal growth and epitaxial thin film growth, with sessions integrating fundamentals, experimental and industrial growth processes, characterization, and applications. Contributed papers will be accepted in all relevant areas. In addition to focused sessions on the topics listed below, sessions will be organized based upon the topical distribution of contributed papers. The conference will include both oral and poster sessions.

Contributed Papers

Abstracts are due March 15, 2000. Authors are requested to submit abstracts by one of the following methods:

Direct submission via the web site is strongly preferred. Abstracts not conforming to the guidelines will not be accepted and will be returned to the authors for reformatting. Authors may request a poster or oral presentation and a session topic for their presentation, but the program chairs will set the program schedule based on the conference requirements. Late news abstracts are due June 1, 2000, and will be assigned as poster presentations. Abstracts should be submitted to:

NASA Microgravity Workshop

At ACCGE-12, NASA will hold a workshop entitled "Applications of Experimentation in a Microgravity Environment to the Science of Electronic Materials". The workshop will examine potential contributions that experimentation in a microgravity environment will make to the understanding of the production and utilization of materials. The first session of the workshop will be devoted to presentations on the state of the art in: 1) crystal growth of materials by bulk processes, chemical vapor transport, and physicalvapor transport, both on the ground and in space; 2) growth of non-linear optical materials; and 3) measurement of diffusion constants. The second session will be in the form of panel discussions. In particular, the perspectives of industry are sought, especially regarding new directions to be targeted. Specific issues to be addressed in the panel sessions will include, but not be limited to: 1) bulk crystals: defect control and composition uniformity in doped and alloyed solid solutions; 2) vapor transport: effect of convection on defect and compositional distribution; 3) non-linear optical materials: aspects of defect and compositional control in both organic and oxide NLO materials; 4) diffusion: measurement of convection-free parameters in elemental, doped and alloyed liquids; and 5) magnetic fields: effectiveness in damping convection.

Publication of Proceedings

Proceedings of ACCGE-12 will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Crystal Growth. Authors of abstracts accepted for presentation are invited to submit manuscripts (not to exceed four journal pages) by June 1, 2000. All manuscripts will be reviewed prior to the conference and must meet the usual standards of the Journal of Crystal Growth.

AACG Crystal Growth Awards:

Call for Nominations

The following awards will be presented at ACCGE-12:

The AACG Crystal Growth Award will be presented to a leading member of the crystal growth community for important and sustained contributions. The original theoretical or experimental work must continue to stimulate others in the field to excel and to have made significant scientific or technological impact. The winner will deliver a lecture, receive an engraved award and a $3000 cash prize.

The Young Author Award is presented to a candidate less than 35 years of age for fresh and imaginative contributions to the field of crystal growth. This work must have been performed in the United States following formal training and subsequently published in refereed journals. The winner receives a framed citation and a $1000 award.

Details on these awards and the nomination process will be available in the Fall, 1999 edition of the AACG Newsletter, on the web site or from the awards chairs. The deadline for nominations is March 1, 2000. A best student paper award will also be given.

Photo Contest

The ACCGE-12 Photo Contest will be held during the conference and submitted photographs will be displayed in a prominent location at the meeting. Participants are invited to submit photographs that portray scientific, technical and artistic aspects of crystals, crystal growth, or characterization. Awards will be given for first, second, and third place, best student entry, and awards committee favorite entry. Winners will be announced at the conference banquet and will receive ribbons and plaques. In addition, the best student entry will receive $50. If the format allows, the winning photos will be published in the AACG Newsletter. Previous entries are not acceptable. Entries should be mounted on a stiff backing and should be no larger than 40 by 50 cm. Entries should be clearly labeled with the following information: a concise title; 25 to 75 word description of the technical significance of the entry; and submitter’s name and affiliation. Submissions for the student category should be clearly labeled as such. The deadline for submission is July 15, 2000. The photos will be returned at the end of the conference. Send entries to ACCGE-12 Photo Contest c/o one of the chairs
