Scope of the Conference ACCGE-11 will provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of recent research and development activities in all aspects of bulk crystal growth and epitaxial thin film growth; sessions will integrate fundamentals, experimental and industrial growth processes, characterization and applications. Contributed papers will be accepted in all relevant areas. In addition to focused sessions on the topics listed below, additional sessions will be organized based upon the topical distribution of contributed papers. This meeting is dedicated to the memory of Robert A. Laudise, one of the founders of the AACG.

Contributed Papers Abstracts are due March 15, 1999. The conference language will be English. Authors are requested to submit half-page abstracts by one of the following methods. Electronic submission is strongly preferred.
  • Electronic abstract forms in popular word processor formats are available for downloading from the conference web site. Simply edit to enter all necessary information and send by email or diskette to the Program Chair.
  • The abstract may be submitted interactively through the web site.
  • If neither of these is possible, a camera ready abstract following the guidelines on the web site may be submitted by mail. A paper abstract form including the guidelines will be provided on request.
  • Abstracts not conforming to the guidelines will not be accepted and will be returned to the authors for reformatting. Authors may request a poster or oral presentation and a session topic for their presentation, but the program chairs will set the program schedule based on the conference requirements. Send all abstracts to the designated Program Chair:

AACG Crystal Growth Awards: Call for Nominations The following awards will be presented at ACCGE-11:

The AACG Crystal Growth Award is presented to a leading member of the crystal growth community for important and sustained contributions. The original theoretical or experimental work must continue to stimulate others in the field to excel and to have made significant scientific or technological impact. The winner will deliver a lecture, receive an engraved award and a $3000 cash prize.

The Young Author Award is presented to a candidate less than 35 years of age for fresh and imaginative contributions to the field of crystal growth. This work must have been performed in the United States following formal training and subsequently published in refereed journals. The winner receives a framed citation and a $1000 award.

Details on these awards and the nomination process will be available in the Winter 1998 edition of the AACG Newsletter, on the web site or from the awards chairs. The deadline for nominations is March 1, 1999.

Facilities and Accommodations All conference functions including the technical sessions, poster displays and industrial exhibits will be held at the facilities of Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, Tucson, Arizona. A block of rooms has been reserved at Loews at a special conference rate of:
  • Single/Double $105 + tax
  • Additional Adults $25 + tax
  • Children under 18 can stay free with an adult. Room tax is currently 7.5%. All rooms are spacious with oversize bathtubs and many other amenities. Parking is free. Loews is a full service luxury resort. Both the resort and the top on-site restaurant, the Ventana Room, are frequently rated among the best in the country. It has a comprehensive range of facilities including restaurants, shops, pools, a health spa, tennis courts and two Tom Fazio designed golf courses. The off season rate at the spa is only $6/day.

For more information about the resort, go to:  http://www.loewshotels.com/ventanahome.html

Social Program The conference social program will include a Sunday evening welcome reception and a Thursday evening conference banquet, both included with registration. Wednesday afternoon tours may include the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, Biosphere II and other options. The guest program will take advantage of the many attractions available in the Tucson area.

Transportation and Weather Conferees may fly directly to the Tucson airport. Phoenix airport is an easy 90 minute drive and has many more direct flights. Directions from both Tucson and Phoenix airports to Loews will be posted on the conference web site. Expect the weather to be pleasantly hot with glorious mornings and evenings. August is the coolest summer month in Tucson with temperatures 10F cooler than July and also 10F cooler than in Phoenix because of the higher altitude. The humidity is low and thunderstorms cool the air many evenings. Temperatures were in the 80's for our August, 1998 planning meeting.
