Scope of the Conference
ACCGE-11 will provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of recent
research and development activities in all aspects of bulk crystal growth
and epitaxial thin film growth; sessions will integrate fundamentals, experimental
and industrial growth processes, characterization and applications. Contributed
papers will be accepted in all relevant areas. In addition to focused sessions
on the topics listed below, additional sessions will be organized based
upon the topical distribution of contributed papers. This meeting is dedicated
to the memory of Robert A. Laudise, one of the founders of the AACG.
Contributed Papers
Abstracts are due March 15, 1999. The conference language will be English.
Authors are requested to submit half-page abstracts by one of the following
methods. Electronic submission is strongly preferred.
Abstracts not conforming to the guidelines will not be accepted and will
be returned to the authors for reformatting. Authors may request a poster
or oral presentation and a session topic for their presentation, but the
program chairs will set the program schedule based on the conference requirements.
Send all abstracts to the designated Program Chair:

Proceedings of ACCGE-11 will be published in a special issue of the Journal
of Crystal Growth, which is included with the registration fee. Authors
of papers accepted for presentation are invited to submit manuscripts comprising
less than four journal pages of material for consideration for publication
by June 1, 1999. All manuscripts will be refereed according to the Journal's
usual high standards prior to the conference and will be judged on whether
this is a unique presentation of the work. All manuscripts should be submitted
to the designated Proceedings Chair:

Photo Contest
All conference registrants are invited to submit photographs that portray
scientific, technical and artistic aspects of crystals, growth or characterization.
Photographs will be displayed at the conference and judged. This year an
award will also be given for the best student entry. Winning photos will
receive an award and be published in the AACG Newsletter. Entries can be
up to 200 x 250 mm (8 x 10) in size and mounted on a stiff 215 x 280 mm
(8.5 x 11) mat. A 75 x 127 mm (3 x 5) card with the photo title, description,
submitter's name and affiliation must accompany each entry. The deadline
for submission is July 15, 1999. The photos will be returned at the end
of the conference. Send entries to ACCGE-11 Photo Contest c/o one of the

Crystal Growth Awards: Call for Nominations
The following awards will be presented at ACCGE-11:
The AACG Crystal Growth Award is presented to a
leading member of the crystal growth community for important and sustained
contributions. The original theoretical or experimental work must continue
to stimulate others in the field to excel and to have made significant
scientific or technological impact. The winner will deliver a lecture,
receive an engraved award and a $3000 cash prize.
The Young Author Award is presented to a candidate
less than 35 years of age for fresh and imaginative contributions to the
field of crystal growth. This work must have been performed in the United
States following formal training and subsequently published in refereed
journals. The winner receives a framed citation and a $1000 award.
Details on these awards and the nomination process will be available
in the Winter 1998 edition of the AACG Newsletter, on
the web site or from the awards chairs. The deadline for nominations
is March 1, 1999.

Facilities
and Accommodations
All conference functions including the technical sessions, poster displays
and industrial exhibits will be held at the facilities of Loews Ventana
Canyon Resort, Tucson, Arizona. A block of rooms has been reserved at Loews
at a special conference rate of:
Children under 18 can stay free with an adult. Room tax is currently 7.5%.
All rooms are spacious with oversize bathtubs and many other amenities.
Parking is free.
-
Call Loews directly at (800)234-5117 to make reservations-mention AACG
or American Association for Crystal Growth to obtain the special rates.
Conference rates will be extended three days before and after the conference
subject to availability.
-
The deadline for making reservations on this room block is July 1, 1999.
All reservations must be guaranteed with a credit card or deposit. Loews
is a relatively small hotel so early reservations are recommended
to assure a room. After the cutoff date reservations will be accommodated
on a space available basis. Early reservations also help the conference
organizers in dealing with the hotel so make them as soon as possible.
-
Reservations may be cancelled or changed without penalty up to 15 days
before arrival. A $25 charge will be assessed 15 days to 48 hours before
arrival. Less than 48 hours before arrival, the guest is charged for one
room night. This applies to arriving a day late or leaving early, so check
the accuracy of your reservation confirmation!
Loews is a full service luxury resort. Both the resort and the top on-site
restaurant, the Ventana Room, are frequently rated among the best in the
country. It has a comprehensive range of facilities including restaurants,
shops, pools, a health spa, tennis courts and two Tom Fazio designed golf
courses. The off season rate at the spa is only $6/day.
For more information about the resort, go to: http://www.loewshotels.com/ventanahome.html
Social Program
The conference social program will include a Sunday evening welcome reception
and a Thursday evening conference banquet, both included with registration.
Wednesday afternoon tours may include the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum,
Biosphere II and other options. The guest program will take advantage of
the many attractions available in the Tucson area.
Transportation
and Weather
Conferees may fly directly to the Tucson airport. Phoenix airport is an
easy 90 minute drive and has many more direct flights. Directions from
both Tucson and Phoenix airports to Loews will be posted on the conference
web site. Expect the weather to be pleasantly hot with glorious mornings
and evenings. August is the coolest summer month in Tucson with temperatures
10F cooler than July and also 10F cooler than in Phoenix because of the
higher altitude. The humidity is low and thunderstorms cool the air many
evenings. Temperatures were in the 80's for our August, 1998 planning meeting.
