ACCGE-11 will provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of
recent research and development activities in all aspects of bulk crystal
growth and epitaxial thin film growth; sessions will integrate fundamentals,
experimental and industrial growth processes, characterization and applications.
This meeting is dedicated to the memory of Robert A. Laudise, one of the
founders of the AACG. The conference language will be English.

Expect the weather to be pleasantly hot with glorious mornings and evenings. August is the coolest summer month in Tucson with temperatures 10° F cooler than July and also 10° F cooler than in Phoenix because of the higher altitude. The humidity is low and thunderstorms cool the air many evenings. Temperatures were in the 80’s for our August, 1998 planning meeting. Attire for the conference will be business casual. We expect the conferees to dress for the warm weather and hope to promote a relaxed technical exchange. The Conference Banquet will be the only formal dress event and the Ventana Room has a dress code.
Note: Web links to Tucson weather are located at http://www.aml.arizona.edu/aacg/conferences/accge11/moreinfo.html
Proceedings of ACCGE-11 will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Crystal Growth, which is included with the registration fee. Authors of papers accepted for presentation are invited to submit manuscripts comprising less than four journal pages of material for consideration for publication by July 1, 1999. All manuscripts will be refereed according to the Journal’s usual high standards prior to the conference and will be judged on whether this is a unique presentation of the work. All manuscripts should be submitted to the designated Proceedings Chair:

Conferees may fly directly to the Tucson airport. Phoenix airport is
an easy 90 minute drive and has many more direct flights. Directions from
both Tucson and Phoenix airports to Loews are posted on the conference
web site. Budget Rent a Car of Tucson is offering discounted
rates to ACCGE-11 attendees. Compact vehicles normally $33.99/day; $165.99/week
will be $29.00/day; $145.00/week. Call 1-800-279-3734 and request the rate
for American Association of Crystal Growth/ID code Z91. Arizona Stagecoach
bus lines is also offering a special rate for ACCGE-11 attendees from the
Tucson Airport. Follow the overhead Arizona Stagecoach signs inside the
airport to the ground level center corridor Stagecoach counter. Departure
is every 15 minutes to Loews. Round trip fare is $40.00 and one way is
$25.00. Be sure to mention AACG to receive these prices. To reserve a return
to the airport, call (520) 889-1000 24 hours in advance.
All conference registrants are invited to submit photographs that portray scientific, technical and artistic aspects of crystals, growth or characterization. Photographs will be displayed at the conference and judged. This year an award will also be given for the best student entry. Winning photos will receive an award and be published in the AACG Newsletter. Entries can be up to 200 x 250 mm (8² x 10² ) in size and should be mounted on a stiff 215 x 280 mm (8.5² x 11² ) mat. A 75 x 127 mm (3² x 5² ) card with the photo title, description, submitter’s name and affiliation must accompany each entry. The deadline for submission is July 15, 1999. The photos will be returned at the end of the conference. Send entries to ACCGE-11 Photo Contest c/o one of the chairs:

Sunday, August 1
Welcome Reception – A Welcome Reception will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the patio by the pool. This activity is open (and free) to all conference participants and accompanying guests. However, for planning purposes, we would like to know how many in your party will be attending.
Monday, August 2
Tombstone – "The town too tough to die." Once one of the wildest and most dangerous towns in the West, Tombstone is now a National Historic Landmark. Visit the OK Corral, Birdcage Theatre, Boot Hill, and Crystal Palace. Walk the streets where Wyatt Earp became a legend. The tour departs at 9:00 a.m. Cost is $65 and includes lunch and round trip transportation.
Tuesday, August 3
San Xavier Mission and Tubac – The "finest example of mission architecture in the U.S.," San Xavier del Bac was founded by the Jesuits in the late 1600’s and revitalized by the Franciscans in the 1780’s. The recently renovated mission was completed in 1797. San Xavier is the only Sonoran Desert mission still served by Franciscans, and it still serves the Native American community for which it was built. Tubac is the second oldest European establishment west of the Mississippi, established in 1752 by Father Kino. This historic town is now an artist colony, the home of over 80 art studios, galleries, unique shops and restaurants. The tour leaves at 9:00 a.m. Cost is $65 including lunch and round trip transportation.
Wednesday, August 4
The following activities are scheduled during the free afternoon time and are open to all conference attendees and their families. All tours depart the hotel at 1:15 p.m. and will return about 6:00 p.m. Costs include round trip transportation to and from the hotel.
Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum – Tucson’s most popular visitor attraction displays animals, plants and birds of the Sonoran Desert in their natural habitat. A must see! Cost is $32.

Jeep Tours – Enjoy an informative, entertaining adventure, while gaining a unique appreciation for the historical Sonoran Desert, in a four-wheel-drive, open-air jeep. An unforgettable experience. Cost is $60.
Thursday, August 5
Colossal Cave and De Grazia Studios – A cave that has earned its name, Colossal Cave is one of the largest "dry," or dormant, caves in the country. Hiding place for Indians and outlaws, this underground wonder remains at 72 degrees Fahrenheit year round. Lunch will be held at the Hidden Valley Inn, a steakhouse with wonderful wooden diorama displays. A landmark in Tucson, De Grazia’s Gallery in the Sun welcomes thousands of visitors each year. Unique adobe construction, beautiful decorative features, and original De Grazia art characterize the gallery that was designed by the artist and constructed under his supervision. The tour departs at 9:00 a.m. Cost is $70 and includes lunch and round trip transportation.
Conference Banquet – The Conference Banquet will be held on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. The regular and student registrations include a banquet ticket. Additional tickets are available for $50 each.
