Staff Scientist

Staff Scientist: Crystal and Material Growth Laboratory

Join RMD’s Material Science Group and support crystal growth in a state of the art, cutting edge laboratory that combines materials research and commercialization. In this entry level position you will be responsible for handling and processing crystals and maintaining research facilities. Because RMD is a research company, the focus is on the development of new technologies. The job will require inventiveness and creativity to develop crystals for diverse applications.

Radiation Monitoring Devices, Inc., in Watertown, MA, is a successful research company devoted to the development of new sensor, detector, and system technologies for commercial, medical and government use.

Job Responsibilities

  • Sawing, polishing, packaging and routine characterization of crystals and assembled packages
  • Helping with crystal growth of semiconductor and scintillator materials
  • Designing mechanical parts and helping with system assembly and laboratory construction
  • Maintaining inventory of quartz components, chemicals and general laboratory supplies
  • Attending and contributing to weekly in-house technical symposia
  • Keeping accurate records of research data, writing reports and procedures
  • Routine handling of air-sensitive and/or hazardous materials inside and outside of a glove-box
  • Interacting with collaborators and understanding how they characterize materials.

Our Requirements

You must be detailed oriented and used to working on diverse projects and multiple projects simultaneously. In addition you should have the following background and experiences.

  • AS, BS plus 2-4 years experience, or equivalent in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Experience working in a crystal growth research and development environment
  • Experience with the assembly, preventative maintenance and operation of custom equipment and vacuum systems
  • Strong mechanical and electrical skills.
  • Skill with machine tools is beneficial
