Senior Crystal Growth Technician,
RMD, Inc.

Radiation Monitoring Devices, Inc., in Watertown, MA, is a successful research company devoted to the development of new sensor, detector, and system technologies for commercial, medical and government use. The company has recently developed new state of the art scintillator crystals and is now will be setting up operations for commercial production.

This Senior Crystal Growth Technician is a new position. The person hired will be responsible for planning, organizing and implementing the day to day operations of production in the crystal growth, processing and test labs used in the manufacture of these scintillator and semiconductor crystals. This individual will also be actively involved in the construction and maintenance of the production facilities.

We are seeking a person with a significant amount of practical experience in crystal growth operations and the inventiveness, creativity, organizational and mechanical skills required for this challenging position.

Job Responsibilities

  • Routine handling of air-sensitive and/or hazardous materials inside and outside of a glove-box
  • Sealing of quartz ampoules with an oxy-propane or an oxy-hydrogen torch
  • Zone refining of semiconductor and scintillator materials
  • Bridgman crystal growth of scintillator and semiconductor materials
  • Sawing, polishing, packaging and routine characterization of crystals and assembled packages
  • Processing of materials and crystals in high purity gases and acids
  • Working with research personal in the transfer of crystal growth processes to manufacturing
  • Developing and following the documented production procedures
  • Responsible for parts and supplies inventory and work in process
  • Planning and expediting the work schedule to meet production goals and quality requirements goals
  • Maintaining and evaluating production yields, in-process WIP and raw material requirements
  • Providing timely reports of equipment malfunction and repairing equipment to maximize uptime
  • Keeping accurate records of process data on paper and in a computerized database
  • Routine verbal and written communications with management and other parts of the operation.
  • Must have a very good command of the English language. This is essential for verbal and written communication within and outside the company.
  • Must have good computer skills. Record keeping, scheduling, communication and purchasing require the routine use of computers.

Our Requirements

You must be detailed oriented and used to working on multiple projects simultaneously. In addition you should have the following background and experiences.

  • 5+ years of experience in crystal growth. The more experience, the better.
  • Associate or Bachelor degree, or equivalent in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics or a closely related field is desired but not essential.
  • Experience working in a crystal growth production or high volume crystal growth research environment
  • Experience with the assembly, preventative maintenance and operation of crystal growth equipment, high purity gas equipment and vacuum systems
  • Strong hands on mechanical, pneumatic, vacuum and electrical skills.
