Senior Crystal Growth Scientist

Radiation Monitoring Devices, Inc. (RMD) is a successful research company devoted to the development of new radiation sensor and systems technologies for commercial, medical and government use. Much of this research is performed under government and private contracts and grants through programs like the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program and Broad Agency Announcements (BAA). Since it’s founding in 1974, RMD has developed and introduced many innovative products to market.

To support our expanding scintillator and semiconductor research efforts RMD is seeking a Senior Crystal Growth Scientist/Engineer. The candidate will provide support in crystal growth, processing and characterization of advanced scintillator and semiconductor materials and devices.

Responsibilities:

R&D and Production knowledge of crystal growth, processing and characterization

Design, build, optimize and maintain crystal growth, processing and characterization equipment and processes

Develop and improve crystal growth and fabrication processes for increased quality and yield

Synthesize and purify high purity starting materials

Prepare and grow rare earth halide and semiconductor single crystals

Process and characterize the physical properties of scintillator and semiconductor crystals

Develop improved hermetic scintillator packaging for moisture sensitive crystals

Deliver internal and external presentations on research results

Write award-winning proposals and generate new contracts


Qualifications:

10+ years of experience in Bridgman or Czochralski crystal growth

BS, MS or Ph.D in Material Science, Chemistry, or Physics

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Experience in writing successful proposals and securing research grants

Creative, detail-oriented individual capable of juggling multiple research projects

Hands-on experience in equipment building and trouble shooting

Some glassblowing skills and experience with material handling in a glovebox environment

Access to a vehicle for occasional pickup and delivery of research supplies from local vendors
