Senior Crystal Growth Scientist,
Saxonburg, PA

Endicott Interconnect Technologies Inc. has recently acquired eV products from II-VI Inc. The renamed eV Microelectronics Division of EI is looking for an expert in the Crystal Growth field.

Overview
Responsible for advanced material synthesis, processing and crystal growth technology development of semi-insulating II-VI compounds for x-ray and gamma ray radiation detector applications. As a member of the eV Crystal Growth Team perform research on advanced crystal growth and processing techniques. These include continuous improvement of the existing crystal growth processes and equipment as well as developing innovative new approaches. Leads collaborative projects with outside partners to develop new crystal growth processes and characterization tools and equipment. Perform in-house and outside characterization of material samples. Develop new material and device characterization techniques and lead their implementation. Leads the design of crystal growth equipment and supporting tools. Participates in the efforts to improve the efficiency, reduce the costs and increase the competitiveness of the crystal growth operation.
Responsibilities
Crystal growth process R&D
  • As Sr. Crystal Growth Scientist, leads internal and collaborative R&D for CdZnTe crystal growth process development projects.
  • Continuously look for CdZnTe crystal growth technology improvement potentials. Question established technologies and practices to reveal improvement opportunities.
  • Conceive, design and perform experimental studies of CdZnTe single crystal growth processes and material properties. Design the appropriate experimental tools to complete the crystal growth and thermal processing experiments. Lead the projects to implement the necessary equipment modifications to complete the experiments and measurements.
  • Work closely with the CdZnTe material and device fabrication R&D team to conceive innovative crystal growth approaches for the growth of CdZnTe single crystals with tailored electrical and charge transport properties.
  • Perform theoretical modeling of crystal growth processes, defect formation, incorporation and diffusion processes, electrical compensation and doping effects, charge transport in radiation detector devices.
  • Participates in the planning and budgeting of the yearly material R&D plan. Tracks and reports internal and contract R&D costs. Ensures that material R&D projects are completed within the planned budget.
Material and Device Characterization
  • Completes a thorough characterization of experimental materials characterization and devices with in-house characterization tools. Manages the outside characterization of material samples and devices.
  • Disseminates results in written reports and presentations to the eV R&D team and wider audience when appropriate.
  • Collaborates with university, national laboratory and industrial researchers to perform material and device characterization with state of the art techniques.
  • Develops and implements new material and CdZnTe device characterization tools and analysis techniques.
Contract R&D
  • Leads thrust to plan, write and publish unsolicited White Papers and solicited proposals in response to most promising informal expressions of interest or formal Requests for Proposal.
  • As a Principal Investigator, directs the planning, organization and execution of specific CdZnTe device fabrication technology Contract R&D programs. Supports the development and planning of budgets and technical milestones for Contract R&D programs.
  • Collaborates appropriately with outside crystal growth experts/consultants to stimulate and accelerate continuous improvement of eV’s CdZnTe technology.
  • Monitors/analyzes/evaluates industry developments in CdZnTe device fabrication and crystal growth and advises eV management on industry/competitor capabilities and trends.
Requirements
Education:
PhD or MS in Material Science, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering
Experience:
Minimum 5 years of experience in semiconductor materials crystal growth, synthesis, processing, deposition techniques, electrical and optical characterization. Hands on experience with the design and operation of crystal growth equipment. Strong background in thermodynamics, phase diagrams, heat transport, nucleation, segregation and crystallization theory of compound semiconductor materials.
Special Abilities:
Knowledge of compound growth and processing. Expertise in optical and electrical characterization of semiconductors. Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems and introduce new technologies in condensed time frame. Ability to conceive, design and operate new equipment. Good interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to direct the work of others, lead work team activities and take direction from more than one source.
