Production Technician Lead – Crystal
(Hillsboro, OR)

The Position
Reporting to a Production Shift Supervisor, the Lead Operator is a senior subject matter expert in the crystal growing area, responsible for operation and troubleshooting of crystal growing processes in addition to driving tactical scheduling and decision making. The Lead Operator serves the following critical functions on the Production team: 1) Collaborates with other team members to meet quality and delivery commitments 2) Guides lesser experienced employees through complex production sequences and troubleshooting activities 3) Performs training and develop training plans for Production personnel 4) Owns day to day tactical scheduling and decision making on the Production floor and 5) Prepares purchase requisitions for operating supplies/tools as needed. The Lead Operator drives continuous improvement activities and maintains the highest standards for workplace safety and quality.

Specific Responsibilities associated with this opportunity include:

  • Perform manufacturing tasks to established work instructions and procedures. Candidates at this level are expected to aggressively identify areas for improvement and act upon them.
  • Troubleshoot process and equipment issues, using a variety of tools and demonstrating a strong aptitude for systematic problem solving
  • Identify potential safety hazards and take steps to prevent accidents or injuries
  • Comply with all company safety and environmental requirements
  • Maintain housekeeping in work areas in accordance with 5S (lean) principles
  • Serve as first line of response to the production team for process problems
  • Identify potential quality problems and take steps to prevent occurrence
  • Train team members in routine production and support tasks
  • Contribute to project teams to implement effective process improvements
  • Submit Engineering Change Requests to address process, design and process issues as they are uncovered
  • Work with the Production Supervisor to support safety & quality audits, conduct shift pass-downs and deploy training
  • Other duties as assigned

The Requirements:

This position is ideal for a candidate who is enthusiastic about being a “green collar” worker in the solar photovoltaic (PV) industry. Successful candidates should demonstrate a desire for personal development, communicate easily, enjoy working in a team environment and be highly flexible. The successful candidate will possess the following combination of education and experience:
  • Associate’s degree in Science, Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Technology or related discipline strongly preferred. Consideration will be given to candidates who demonstrate an equivalent level of skills and abilities.
  • Must possess a minimum of 7+ years related work experience in high-volume manufacturing, with a preference for experience in solar, semiconductor or related technologies. Entry into this level is based on management’s judgment of skills and abilities.
  • A basic working knowledge of the following equipment and/or production processes is preferred:

    Crystal Growing – Crystal Growing Equipment (CZ Growers)

    Wafering – Wafer Slicing and Squaring Tools; Cropping and Grinding Tools; High-Volume Automated Wafering systems for Solar or Semiconductor markets; Robotics (location and trajectory teaching); Final Cleaning and Singulation equipment.

    Cell – Diffusion Furnaces, Wet Bench Etching equipment; Photolithography, Epi and other equipment related to silicon wafer processing in Solar, Semiconductor or MEM’s manufacturing.
  • Prior experience with the operation of such equipment and performance of basic PM’s and minor equipment maintenance is preferred.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills (written and verbal) as you will be working in a team environment that is very data-driven.
  • Basic computer skills are required including familiarity with windows-based programs such as Microsoft productivity tools (e.g., Excel, Word). Additional preference given for familiarity with manufacturing or ERP systems and data entry and/or collection from such systems.
  • Familiarization and experience with SPC (Statistical Process Control) is preferred but not required.
  • A working knowledge of basic equipment and manufacturing safety procedures is required (e.g., lock-out / tag-out, electrical / high-voltage, chemical, reading MSDS, incident response procedures).
  • Must demonstrate and ability to conduct data collection and measurement activities utilizing standard and metric systems.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have the ability to lift up to 40 lbs and be physically able to perform some repetitive motions.
